Rubber Mulch
You've heard about rubber mulch - recycled, shredded tires used under playgrounds.
We carry the mulch that was used under the playground at the White House in Washington, DC.
Here you can learn all about this product - and even purchase this mulch for your own playground.
What makes rubber mulch special?
Rubber mulch does not degrade, break down or lose it's resiliency over time. It is 100% recycled tires with the metal removed. It is completely non-toxic. It cushions against falls from playground equipment much better than other mulch.
How do I figure out how much I need?
For backyard playgrounds, use 4" to 6"
for all deck heights less than 12' high.
For schools or daycares, follow the guidelines of your licensing agency.
How much do I need to use?
The absolute minimum for a residential backyard playground is 4" deep, and 6" is better. Because rubber mulch is so much more resilient than other loose mulch products, impact ests indicate that just 6" protects against falls from 12' high. No other loose mulch product gives as much protection at 4" or 6" deep.
When buying mulch for commercial applications we recommend consulting with your local licensing agency or a Certified Playground Safety Inspector in your area because recent CPSC revised guidelines recommended 9" of every loose fill mulch product - even though rubber mulch tests prove lesser depths are necessary.
Next, determine the size of your playground's recommended fall zone.
Multiply the length by width of the fall zone to get the square footage.
How is this mulch sold?
Rubber mulch is sold in bulk, in one-ton 'super-sacks' or in small 30 pound bags. For the homeowner and most commercial applications, the one-ton bag is the most economical.
| Mulch Depth Required | How much one ton covers | How much a 30 pound bag covers |
| 4 inches | 214 square ft. | 3.2 square ft |
| 5 inches | 171 square ft. | 2.5 square ft. |
| 6 inches | 142 square ft. | 2.1 square ft. |
| 9 inches | 95 square ft. | 1.4 square ft. |
Is this mulch safe?
Yes. The mulch and the paint are both completely non-toxic.
Does this mulch contain any steel remnants?
No. The mulch passes through 4 separate magnetic processes
Now use the chart to see how much a ton or a 30 pound bag will cover based on the depth you need. Divide the total square footage you have by the number of square feet covered to get the total number of tons or bags. Round up for partial tons or bags.
How much does it cost per ton?
Our price is $695 per ton in the one ton super-sack, plus freight, for any of the colored mulches. The black mulch is unpainted and therefore costs less. It is $450 per ton plus freight to your site. A 50/50 mix of black and any color is $575 per ton. Freight charges will depend on your location.
Special Note On Shipping
Each of the one ton bags weighs 2000 pounds.
The truck driver will not help you unload.
